Honoring the Memory of Jim Deane
An exceptional man, Jim Deane had passion for community, education, people and principles. Deane was a pillar in the community. He served on the Maple Grove Park Board before being elected to the City Council. He eventually served as the Mayor of Maple Grove. After retiring from city politics, Deane went on to become Chairman of the Three Rivers Park District.
Deane spent the majority of his career as a teacher and coach at Osseo High School. He made an impact on the lives of so many: students, fellow teachers and other coaches, to name a few. Deane was a dedicated and knowledgeable cross country and track coach who inspired his teams to view running as a lifelong sport. During his nearly 40-year career, he coached state champions and all-state runners.
In 2016 Mike Anderson, then chair of the Rice Lake Run, renamed this annual event in honor of Deane. A runner himself, Deane was a staple during the run’s first 20 years. From registering the runners and sounding the starting horn to cheering the participants and handing out awards, Deane put his heart into this event. It is an honor to remember his legacy each July at the Jim Deane Rice Lake Run.
